A little historical information about the companyCMA CGM

 In 1978, the CMA had one shipping line between Beirut Latakia Marseille and Livorno.  

One ship.  Four employees who work side by side with Jacques Saade. 

1980 
CMA French Colours  The first CMA vessel in Ville-d'Orient is bought in full ownership.  He joined another ship Ville du Levant responsible for providing a direct service from Beirut to New York.  Two years later, the CMA sets its sights on the north by gradually opening maritime agencies in England, Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany.

1980 
Innovative spirit
In Marseille, the pioneers of 1978 increased from 5 to 65. The war in Lebanon prevents the CMA fleet from making its usual ship calls in Beirut.  To fulfill their obligations to customers, ships transfer their goods in Cyprus on small vessels which are then unloaded to secondary Lebanese ports.  The concept of a relay to a transshipment port is being born.

1981 
The forerunner of multimodal services in the maritime industry
In addition to sea transportation, CMA decides to deliver goods directly to the final destination, thereby creating its multimodal service.  This opens up the opportunity to be active in the Short and Middle East.

1983 
Passing through the Suez Canal
The CMA continues to expand its lines and passes through the Suez Canal for the first time.

1986

Setting a course for Asia

CMA decides to expand its North-Europe-Red Sea line in Asia.  This is a historic first that will give the company great help in the marine industry.

1987

A well-known and recognized player

CMA makes an agreement on cooperation in trade with other large companies within the framework of Red Sea Express. CMA becomes a well-known and recognized player in the maritime industry.

1992

Opening to China

CMA opens its first office in Shanghai .  In its first ship appeal in China, the company consolidates the project was started in 1986 to expand in Asia.  It marks the beginning of a great Chinese adventure.  Today, CMA CGM Group has 64 offices and institutions and about 2,000 employees.

1994

Historical Service of FAL

Eight ships of 3,400 TEU now make regular return flights between Europe and East Asia.  This service is called FAL (French Asia Line) and becomes the CMA signature line the largest in terms of business volume and number of vessels.

The twentieth largest shipping company worldwide

CMA is currently internationally recognized.  This recognition allows the opening of the MEX (Med Club Express) line, the first shipping line dedicated to the Asian-Mediterranean market, cooperating with two major companies: NYK (Japan) and YML (Taiwan).  With 29 ships and 350,000 containers shipped, CMA becomes the 20th largest shipping company in the world.

1995

The Spirit of imagination

Seventeen years ago, Jacques Saade founded the CMA based on the principles of initiative, courage and loyalty.  The new meaning that 'Imagination' is being added to the CMA corporate culture againv.  It becomes the motto of the Group.

Number 1 in France

CMA becomes the number 1 French container shipping company.

1996

The birth of a new giant

In 1996, Compagnie Générale Maritime (CGM) which at one time transported passengers on liners such as "Normandy" or "France" only supports its cargo transportation when the French government decides to privatize.The CMA's industrial plan has been selected.  Jacques Saade gets CGM back on an even keel in less than a year.  CMA CGM and merger in 1999, the newly formed conglomerate becomes No 12 worldwide.

1998

EVENTSopens the door to the Pacific Ocean

The group continues to develop worldwide thanks to the launch of new lines but also due to external growth: in December 1998, it acquires the Australian National Line (ANL) thus opening up new opportunities in Oceania.  Currently, the Group has 80 vessels (20 of which are fully owned) and employs 2,500 people.

1999

Global Delivery

CMA CGM Group (with over 3,000 employees worldwide) currently has 65 shipping lines serviced by its 81 vessels.  In addition to its 'Around the World' or 'End to End' line, it launches its first return journey North Europe-Asia-West Coast of North America route.  Asia and the Americas are currently connected.

2000

Shipping Company of the Year

CMA CGM has just entered the Top 10 worldwide selected as the "Company of the Year" by Containerization International.  In 2007, Jacques Saade was named "Personality of the Year" by the international magazine Seatrade.

Panama Express

In order to increase its operations in North America, CMA CGM Group decides to immediately connect Asia with the east coast of the United States by passing through the Panama Canal.  In a few years, CMA CGM has become one of the channel's main clients, a strategic intersection point in the flow of ship traffic around the globe.

2002

Acquisition of MacAndrews (UK)

CMA CGM acquires  MacAndrews develop European coastal swimming.  In the same year, he builds a new office in Marseille.

2003

CMA CGM becomes No. 5 in the world with 153 ships and 304,000 TEU.  Orders are a group of 21 vessels with a capacity of 5,700 and 8,200 TEU.

Environment: CMA CGM makes commitments

Port Terminals: a new strategic direction for CMA CGM

In 1997, CMA CGM is transferring its transshipment operations in the Mediterranean Sea from Damietta (Egypt) In Malta, SMA CGM Group decided to invest in the island after realizing the importance of controlling port operations at major hubs.  In October 2004, the Maltese government granted CMA CGM a 30-year concession to manage the island's container terminals.  Four years later, the concession is extended to 65 years.

Rail complements sea transport

CMA CGM Group is once again modernizing by offering the first full trains with 60 cars capable of transporting 120 containers from Le Havre to Marseille with immediate loading and departure to Algeria.  Saving one week of transit time is a concept that is completely new and unique in the market - it is an instant success and is applied to other destinations.  It represents the first stage of the Group's global development strategy for rail transport.

DELMASafrican specialist

Hoping to accelerate its growth in West Africa, CGM Group CMA acquires Delmas, a long-standing specialist in trade on the African continent.

Company Fund

The values of the strong CMA CGM Group lead him to create a CMA CGM Corporate Fund.  Since its inception , Naila Saade has headed the foundation , which has three goals: 
- to encourage the development of the personality of children with disabilities 
- improve the daily life of children who are sick 
- in order to create equal opportunities for the underprivileged youth

CMA CGM FIDELIO

On July 4, 2006, the CMA CGM FIDELIO is the flagship of the CMA CGM fleet sailing under the French flag it was christened in Marseille.With its length of 349 meters, the surface area is equal to three football fields and its 9,415thyThis vessel is one of the largest container ships in the world.  The vessel can stay at sea for two months and travel 55,000kmwithout refueling.  His goal is to bring China and Europe closer together.

CMA CGM is the third largest cargo transportation company worldwide

CMA CGM Group becomes the 3rd largest shipping company in the world in the field of container transportation.

2007

The leader's motto

Since 1995, the 'Spirit of Imagination' has been one of the guiding principles of the Group.  Other mottos follow: "team spirit" during the CMA/CGM merger and then 'Delivery to Art'.  In 2007, CMA CGM decides to reflect its growth through the new motto 'Advanced Shipping' which expresses its values of boldness and energy, its technological achievements and its status as an industry leader.

Acquisition of Comanav CNC and USA lines

CMA CGM Group conducts its international growth based on the strategy that allies the creation of new lines with external growth and diversification of modes of transport and port facilities: in 2007, the Group becomes even stronger by buying several large CNC companies (TAIWAN) Comanav (Maroc) and US Lines (États-Unis) all of which have a huge regional experience.

ARB Buyout

The group is buying a British ARB insurance company broker at Lloyd's in London.

Delivery of the first 11.000 TEUs

The first ships with 11,000 TEU ordered by the Group are delivered: CMA CGM Vela and CMA CGM Thalassa.

A strong leader with a focus on the future

Europe Asia Middle East Africa India and the Americas: representation of 200 shipping routes and 400 ports served.  More than 16,000 people and about 400 ships.  However, in the top three worldwide, CMA CGM Group now has one of the largest volumes of orders in the industry with 77 vessels pending.  Among them are several giant container ships with more than 13,000 TEU, the largest in the world, which will allow CMA CGM Group to continue expanding its most important force is an efficient expert and motivated workforce.

CMA CGM is called 'OceanCarrierof the year" from the world's leading major retailer.

CMA CGM Tower

The new CMA CGM tower is built on a daring line: 147 meters high and 33 floors.  CMA CGM loyal to the city where it all started for the company in 1978 decides to create its new head office in Marseille.  The tower was designed by one of the most famous architects in the world, Zaha Hadid.  The tallest structure in Marseille, the CMA CGM Tower is now a beacon and a symbol of the company's energy and economic ambition.

CMA CGM MARCO POLO

The CMA CGM Group receives delivery of the largest vessel in its fleet and the largest container ship in the world (in terms of capacity) in the CMA CGM Marco Polo capable of carrying up to 16,000 TEU and measuring 396 meters long.  It is deployed on the Group FAL 1 (French Asia Line) route that connects Asia to Northern Europe.  In addition to its huge size, the SMA CGM MARCO POLO is equipped with the latest eco-friendly technological innovations.

Containers of Hope

Ms. Naila Saade, President of the Corporate Foundation, took part in the opening of the Containers of Hope  operation.  This involves transporting 100 containers in favor of two well-known NGOs - Doctors Without Borders and Fight against Hunger - for their programs in Africa.The material being transported allows them to deal with the sanitary and food crises that are impacting the continent.

Greenmodal Transport

CMA CGM brings all its multimodal solutions together under one flag:  Greenmodal transport .  The operator now offers a simplified and neutral solution that covers three modes of transport (road railway waterway).By making a modal shift CMA CGM reduces costs but more importantly the carbon footprint by making Greenmodal Transport an entity that respects the environment.

Year rewards'

CMA CGM receives the 'Best Partner of the Year 2012' award from Samsung Electronics and ASDA in essence Walmart Awards is the 'International Carrier of the Year' award for the second year in a row.

Schenker International logistics services provider recognizes the Group for the quality of its services and its sustainability policy by awarding it the 'Second Holder of 2012' trophy.

Its institutions have also received awards directly such as CMA CGM India Pvt.Ltd which was named 'ContainerShipping Line of the Year' during the South India Cargo & Logistics Awards 2012 ceremony in recognition of its activities achieved in European trade with its NEMO service or as CMA CGM of Pakistan which won the 'Most Cost-effective Shipping Line'The prize is awarded by the Pakistan International Freight Forwarders Association in June 2012.

In terms of trade publications Containerization International is also named CMA CGM No. 1 for overall productivity in Asia.

FSI agreement to acquire a share in the capital of CMA CGM Group in

Having received positive financial results in 2012, CMA CGM Group publishes one of the best performances of the sector.  Fonds stratégique d'Investissement (FSI) (French public investment fund) acquires a stake in the capital of CMA CGM Group B.

CMA CGM ALEXANDER VON Humbolt

The second in a series of three ships of 16,000 TEU, the largest container ships in the world (which bear the names of great explorers) CMA CGM ALEXANDER VON Humbolt begins operation on April 19, 2013, sailing under the English flag.  Like CMA CGM Jules Verne and CMA CGM Marco Polo, it is deployed on the FAL of the Group's largest shipping route.  It opened on May 30, 2013 in Hamburg with founder Jacques Saade-The CMA CGM Group president and CEO in office.

CMA CGM Jules Verne: the largest container ship in the world of sailing under the French flag

The third in a series of three giant 396 meter vessels with 16,000 TEU, the CMA CGM Jules Verne is delivered on April 30, 2013. At that time, it was the largest container ship in the world of sailing under the French flag.  On the occasion of the 35th anniversary, Jacques Saade decides to inaugurate the flagship of the fleet in Marseille, the home of the CMA CGM Group.  The ship was opened on June 4, 2013 with the President of the French Republic Francois Hollande.  This event is also an occasion to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the company.  The vessel is deployed on the FAL largest shipping route for both CMA CGM Group and the world.

2014

OCEAN THREE: a new and unique range of services combining speed and reliability

Rodolphe Saade led the discussions leading to three key agreements on the world's largest maritime professions withChina ShippingContainer Lines (CSCL) and the United Arab Shipping Company (UASC).  Under the name OCEAN, the three agreements relate to the following maritime professions: Asia-Europe Asia-Mediterranean crossing and Asia-USA East Coast.

CMA CGM Announces Acquisition of OPDR

OPDR (Oldenburg-Portugiesische Dampfschiffs-Rhederei GmbH & Co. KG) is a shipping expert in short sea transportation anddoor to doorlogistics for Northern Europe, the Canary Islands of the Iberian Peninsula and Morocco.  With more than 200 dedicated employees and a network of agencies, the company connects Europe, Scandinavia and North Africa.

New terminals and ISSA

2015 is active for the development of CMA CGM in logistics.Indeed, CMA CGM signs a contract for the operation of a logistics platform in cooperation with a Cuban company receives a Kribi container terminal concession for a period of 25 years receives a Kingston Container Terminal concession" >terminaland opens a new logistics platform in Douala while announcing the creation of ISSA its essence dedicated to the development of internal solutions in the field of transport.

Chinese Premier Li Keqiang's historic visit

Chinese Premier Mr. Li Keqiang visited the CMA CGM headquarters in Marseille on July 1.  During this exceptional visit, two important agreements were signed: a partnership between China Merchants (CMHI) and CMA CGM to develop a strategic 'one belt one Road' project and a $1 billion financial solutions framework agreement with Chinese bank CEXIM.

Inauguration of the CMA CGM Bougainville

CMA CGM Bougainville the world's largest container ship sailing under the French flag will be opened on Tuesday, October 6 by French President Francois Hollande in Le Havre.  During the ceremony, French President Francois Hollande pays tribute to CMA CGM Jacques Saade success.

Goal achieved: Within 10 years, CMA CGM has improved its carbon performance by 50%

After the initial goal indicated in 2005, the group managed to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 50% in a container on its fleet-owned.  This achievement was made possible by investing in technical innovations, the quality of work and the use of large-tonnage vessels.

The Year of the Giants

Many large-tonnage vessels are added to the fleet-owned group: in CMA CGM Bougainville in CMA CGM Vasco de Gama in CMA CGM Georg Forster in CMA CGM Kerguelen in CMA CGM Zheng He in CMA CGM Benjamin Franklin and many more than 14 vessels from 9400 TEU to 10 900 TEU named rivers.  In accordance with the CMA CGM environmental strategy, all these vessels are equipped with efficient technologies.

CMA CGM Benjamin Franklin Becomes the Largest container ship Ever to call in the United States

In 2015 , Jacques R.Saadé group chairman and Chief Executive Officer decided to deploy the ship's capacity of 18.000 TEU in the USA for a trial call.  On December 26, 2015, CMA CGM Benjamin Franklin called the Port of Los Angeles and became the first carrier to call in an American port from a vessel of this size.  The ship was opened in the port of Long Beach on February 19.
